How DO you make those Animal Costumes? (Fursuits)
Quad suits in action?

I always wanted to make a quad suit and I know the jest of building it. But theres one question, how do you move in them?

I'd love to see any videos on quad suits in action, to how they work. Anything will be much appreciated!

It seems like the choices are:

1) Have two people in the costume,

2) Have some kind of complicated mechanism to move the legs (which I haven't seen anyone pull off well yet),

3) Put the back legs on some kind of wheels so they drag along behind you (also something I haven't seen anyone pull off well. I've seen a guy with a wheeled 'centaur' costume at rennfairs, but I think it looks sort of silly).

#1 seems like the most feasible approach.

For taurs, yes. Large quads would also be doable by any of those methods, but smaller quads you can also do by having the wearer's body horizontal, as in the arm-stilt or knees-bent methods. I want to build a taur someday, and intend to try Triggur's method 1. For a quad (which I also want to do sometime), I'd probably try the knees-bent stance. But then, the quad I'd do would probably be a dog or a bear; for a cat, you'd want thinner legs, and the hand-stilt method would probably be better.

Good point, yes. I was thinking mostly in the 'taur realm and not so much quad. Thanks! :)

Actually, fake forelimbs work best, I think.

Like quadsuit like this? http://images.cosplay.com/gallery.php?cat=51325&member=2638

Saw that at Nekocon one year and it was pretty awesome. Lots of padding and sort of a stilt system inside for leg length.

Santa fox has his Billy the goat, I think his Rancula the tirancula is also a quad suit. Hed be one to talk to.

I've heard of using string across the legs (then I guess you could have it hidden under a horse blanket) for a Centaur quad - one person, but 4 legs... I'm not quite sure how well that works though >_>

Otherwise, not sure which quads your looking for - 2 people, 'taurs, or stilts

For stilts...

The most impressive quadsuit I've seen is Keroberos, which I've actually found a video for [seen here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=URYHNdixOyA ].

I think the best thing about that costume is the movable wrists. They are pretty simple in design, but it makes it look much less like it has sticks for forelimb like most other quads do - A definite 'must have'.

I definitely agree. I love that suit.

how did that person make the wrists "flop" like that? and does your hinge'd hooves work well to where u can tell the difference?

I believe people have had good results from using stilts on the arms. Make sure you design it with a lot of support though, so it attaches to the arm rather than being held manually.

I can't direct you to any good links i'm afraid.

Hey

I've been watching this community for a while but haven't joined yet since what I've built so far doesn't really fit under the 'fursuit' category as such. (that might change soon, as I'm stoked about building a werewolf, but that'll be a while).
However, I do have a creature that I built and it is a quad suit.
Unfortunately I don't have any footage of the finished creature online just yet but I do have some video of him in progress, which is probably more helpful anyway for seeing how things are built.
Here's a still photo of the creature:

And here's a short video of the early work in progress:

(click 'download' on the left to watch).

If anyone finds this useful feel free to link to it in a separate post.
