How DO you make those Animal Costumes? (Fursuits)
Proboscises/Trunks

Hello again. Trying to draw up plans for the sort of fursuit I may start next year. It's my fursona

I've not seen any tutorials for this, nor even any suits I can bother anyone over; no elephants, no shrews, no tapirs, nothing. My question is, how do you make a trunk? I don't want to make it just..stationary in the head and just SIT there, yanno? Neither do I want to make the head without the trunk and put a sort of sock over that area, because it'll look like it; like I put a sock over a face, so it just hangs without any volume whatsoever.

I've looked at many a method, mainly thinking I may have to sew canvas and foam, putting a "template" on the skull and furring whatever it is...like, a slinky-esque pipe, then fur over it.

What are your suggestions? Has anyone made any "nosey" animals like this?

I have a baby mammoth quadsuit on my list and i plan to take a chain, put rings of foam around it spaced like an inch apart and then put fur over that, i want the trunk to swing about as the costume moves and to be able to curve and such, i may even put a magnet in the end to interact with props (grab a fake carrot for instance).

I made a 'test' trunk a while back and that's pretty much exactly what I did. Though instead of fur I used latex-dipped cloth to cover it and that ended up really making the whole thing too stiff.

But the chain and foam part worked very well.

edit: ugh 'trunk' not 'truck' XD

A chain.. chain. Made of metal. I didn't put a lot of thought into it - Just go to the store and find a size you like.

@ beastcub
what is the chain made of?
A baby mammoth quad would be so awsome. I always thought it be funny to make a mammoth suit and waunder past a palontological consultants offics. There is one in the foothills which have a mammoth mascot.... Or go to AGU which is this huge earth science convention in San fransisco and have the suit with a sign that says thank you for your work to stop global warming...... of course while funny it prolly would not be a good idea in practice.....

Snuffelupigus has a trunk (Seasame Street - propably spelled wrong) and there may be some info / images on the muppet wiki or youtubes that may provide inspiration. Also Labyrinth and Dark Chrystal movies.

Not sure how they did it, but Luskwood did a mammoth a while ago...

I have also been planning on makeing a nosey critter in the future, a mammoth. I had though about useing pool noodles or foam but I think the chain idea would prolly work better as long as the chain is not too heavey. I had some freinds suggest attaching suspenders to the head in order to keep it from over balancing since the trunk will make up the majority of the weight in the head.

I think your overthinking it a bit :)
You could do a 'sock' and then stuff it with polyfill, like a tail!
Or, you could carve the trunk out of foam, attatch it to the head and fur it like you would the rest of the head :)
